Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde excited after avoiding Liverpool in Champions League draw
Ernesto Valverde is thrilled after Barcelona avoided
Liverpool in the last-16 draw held on Monday - The Camp Nou dwellers will face
Lyon in the knockout stages - Liverpool after finishing second in Group C will
battle Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde is
excited after the Catalan side avoid Premier League giants Liverpool in the
last-16 draw held on Monday, December 17 in Nyon, Switzerland. According to
givemesport.com report, Valverde never wanted to see Barcelona face Liverpool
after the Jurgen Klopp’s side finished as runners-up in Group C behind Paris
Saint-Germain and ahead of Napoli and Red Star Belgrade.
"We are pleased with the Round of 16
draw. We wanted to avoid a rival like Liverpool, the current runners-up in
Europe,” Valverde was quoted as saying by RAC1. Interestingly, the Camp Nou
dwellers will now tackle Ligue 1 side Lyon in the knockout stages, and are
tipped as favourites to progress to the quarter-finals rounds.
"Lyon will not be easy, as they have been
able to compete for top-spot in the group stages at Manchester City,” Valverde
added. Already, bookmakers are tipping Premier League leaders Manchester City
as favourites for the Champions League, with Barcelona rated as second
favourites. However, moments after the Monday’s draw the Reds are now tipped
fifth favourites behind the quartet of Manchester City, Barcelona, Juventus and
PSG. Last season's finalists, Liverpool will have a mountain to climb when they
face Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich. Defending champions, Real Madrid will
have a seemingly easy contest against Eredivisie side, Ajax Amsterdam.
