It is only a few days to the end of 2018 as the countdown to the new year has began. However, it is the duty of Celebrity Diary, the social media watchdog to document some of the stories that trended in 2018. So, in this edition of Celebrity Diary we are bringing you some of the events that held social media captive in 2018, enjoy!

Mercy Aigbe in red dress, mansion saga
The year 2018 was ushered in with drama for popular Nollywood actress, Mercy Aigbe as she was enmeshed in a dress saga on social media. According to our earlier reports, the actress had unknowingly rocked a red dress belonging to a bride for her 40th birthday photo shoot while the distraught bride resorted to social media to drag the Omoge Benin actress.

However, the brouhaha came to a halt when the mother of two took to Instagram to set the record straight and also sympathize with the bride. Also, the light skinned thespian made headlines again few months ago when it was alleged that her magnificent mansion which she had showed off on Instagram was acquired for her by a state governor.
A claim that was debunked by Mercy who said she bought the house with her hard earned money and that rumor mongers were only peddling an untrue story. Meanwhile, Aigbe has proven that a few controversies are not enough to set her back as she has just brought herself a brand new car to celebrate Christmas.
When Funke Akindele didn’t make it to Hollywood
Fans of talented actress Funke Akindele were elated when news broke that the comic role interpreter was going to debut in Hollywood as she was cast for a role in Hollywood superhero movie, Avengers: Infinity War.
After a cast lineup with the name of the popular actress surfaced online, excited lovers of the screen diva quickly made it a social media affair by taking to different social media platforms to brag about their own going to the most celebrated film industry in the world. However, their joy was short lived when days after Jenifa’s name was spotted on the cast list of Avengers, it was reported that the actress name was replaced with that of another actress, Genevieve Nnaji whose name subsequently disappeared from the list also.

In January the biggest entertainment reality show, Big Brother Naija premiered in South Africa and up till date the season three of the game show has remained the most talked about season the show has had since inception. Themed Double Wahala,the widely acclaimed reality TV showed quickly became the most viewed show in Africa only few days after it started airing.

Housing 20 contestants(housemates) for three months, the Big Brother house was a den of love, hate, gossips and sex as 20 young adults from all walks of life battled to live together in a confinement, leaving Miracle Igbokwe as the last man standing and winner of the highly coveted prize . Big Brother Naija Double Wahala made our list because even months after the show has ended the housemates have managed to remain in social media conversations in their different ways and has kept us entertained.
WIZKID: The new bride of African music
Davido’s Assurance
Social media was sent into frenzy when pop singer, Davido surprised his girlfriend, Avril Chioma Rowland with a multi-million naira Porsche car on her birthday. The DMW henchman had before the unforgettable event flaunted his love interest who he fondly referred to as Chef Chi on social media. To celebrate her 23rd birthday OBO presented a clueless Chioma with the black whip which was rumored to have cost 45million naira.
The car was with a number plate that read ‘Assurance’ which was also the title of a song the singer dedicated to Chef Chi and released on her birthday. Meanwhile, Davido’s assurance and his consistency with Chioma has left a lingering question of whether the Skelewu singer has found the right one.
Supremacy war between Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade
In a quest to crown the queen of Nigerian music, singers Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade were placed at loggerheads. The cold war started when Yemi Alade during a radio interview rated herself equal to Tiwa Savage, Wizkid, Davido, Olamide and other A’list artistes ruling the Nigerian music scene.

The matter escalated when Yemi Alade refused to defend Tiwa when the Radio Presenter, Misi said unlike Yemi who is a good singer, Tiwa only shouts. To rubbish Misi’s claim Tiwa was swift to defend herself by sharing a video of herself singing sonorously on Instagram and also took a swipe at the OAP who she accused of begging her for money. For days, social media debaters argued on who is a better singer between the two divas and is well deserving of the crown. It was also gathered that shortly after this, Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade unfollowed each other on social media.
Wizkid versus babymamas
2018 was another successful year (career wise) for international music export, Wizkid. With a chat topping single, Soco, numerous collaborations, sold out shows among others, the Starboy must be counting his blessings as the year runs to an end. However, not much success was recorded regarding the singer’s family life as he had unpleasant encounters with some of his baby mamas on social.
The Ojuelegba crooner who has three sons from three different women had to face off with two of the women, Oluwanishola and Binta who accused the singer of being a ‘deadbeat dad’ who shies away from his fatherly responsibilities to his children.
2019: Preach tolerance, Buhari tells Nigerians
Wizkid’s ordeal with his babymamas started when Binta called him out on social media for being an irresponsible father who has refused to pay for child support of their two-year-old son, Ayo. An allegation that was subsequently corroborated by Sola, Starboy’s first babymama and mother of his first child, Boluwatife. Shola’s messy revelation of her parenting experience with the singer shook the cyberspace as it not only stirred up conversations between social media users but also entertainers who weighed in on the controversy.

Linda Ikeji’s pregnancy scandal
Popular blogger, Linda Ikeji was a hot topic on social media after she officially revealed that she was expecting a baby. The media mogul who makes a living by writing about people and often times slams women who have babies out of wedlock (babymamas) got her fair share of backlash when she conceived without being married. The media mogul who recently had her baby dedication was trashed for not practicing what she preached, ending up as a babymama also. The CEO of Linda Ikeji blog and TV became a butt of jokes for many, especially, controversial journalist, Kemi Olunloyo who mocked the new mom endlessly during pregnacy and after her delivery. Although Linda had earlier announced her engagement to an unknown person who was also perceived to be the father of her son, Jayce but going by her recent post her engagement to Sholaye Jeremi who she also unveiled in the post is over.
Falz on ‘This is Nigeria’
Singer/rapper, Folarin Falana popularly known as Falz caused a fuss on the internet when he dropped hit single, This is Nigeria. The song which was an imitation of Donald Glover’s ‘This is America’ garnered about three million views in a week of its release as it portrayed the ills plaguing Nigeria.
However, instead of being applauded for churning out a sensitive and conscious music, the Bahd Guy was threatened with a court order by the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC). Falz was accused of promoting negative stereotype against citizens of the country and was ordered to take down the inciting video from the internet or face legal actions.

At the mention of a court order, Nigerians on social media came out enmasse to support the Sweet Boy hit maker and also condemn MURIC for ignoring the relevant issues and dwelling on the not-so important ones. Although Falz refused to heed to MURIC’s warning, the singer never appeared in court and the last has yet to be heard about the issue.
Wizkid’s fever bug
Some weeks ago music superstar, Wizkid’s hit single Fever rented the social media air and everyone seemed to catch the bug. The singer shocked fans with the visual of the song which he had earlier released.

To the utmost surprise of everyone, Starboy featured his alleged lover and singer, Tiwa Savage who acted as his love interest in the video that amassed over one million views on the day of it release. The video sparked an intense debate online as social media commentators argued whether the two singers are indeed lovers. Even though there has been no confirmation or denial of a romantic relationship by both singers, their performances in Fever video had tongues wagging.
